Photoshop’d!

Monday, March 31st, 2008

One of my new favorite blogs to read is PhotoShopped.  It’s fantastic!  This blog turns a critical—and fairly humorous—eye to all the overblown/overprocessed magazine covers and photos we see every day.  The one with Ann Coulter is especially crazy!  It’s about time, I say!

If you have any other blogs like this, please share. Â I could read these all day!

The Bad Josh Gets 25 Years

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It’s one of the sickest things I’ve ever heard in the news, and even worse because this guy shares my name. Â

Here’s what happened: Â last May, a guy in Alabama named Joshua Mauldin punched his baby and put her in the microwave for 20 seconds leaving her horribly scarred and burned. Â After you recover from that, Â sentencing was handed down today for him: Â 25 years in prison. Â The prosecution is still pushing for life. Â

It’s tough to believe people can be so sick and twisted. Â Way to bring shame to the name there Josh. Â Â Not so unbelievably, lots of people I know have asked me if it was me who did it! Â Just to be clear: Â different Joshua Mauldin. Â I love babies and don’t use microwaves for anything.

Parents + Wii = Reality?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

After years and years of hearing my mother tell me “I’m not buying another video game system” she finally broke down and bought a Wii for both her and my Dad.  I had no idea that after almost a year and a half on the market these things would still be in such short supply, or that my parents would ever buy one.  After bringing mine over and letting my Dad get addicted to Wii Tennis it was on, apparently.

If you’re looking for a Wii in your area, I’d say check out this link.  It’s pretty handy, just type in your zip code and you’ll be able to find what stores have a Wii in your area.  It searches most of the big box retailers, as well as Amazon and Ebay.

So I guess all that is to say congratulations and whatnot.  And also “booyah!”  But mostly congratulations.

Wii Game Expansions?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

I’ve noticed something a little curious lately on a few of the key Nintendo games, and I think it’s especially of note since there is going to be an update to the Wii this spring where you can buy smaller Wii games and add them to your console.

Games like Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy seem to have this world map that expands and new things appear as you progress in the game.  While that’s not necessarily a new convention for Nintendo—quite the opposite actually—I think it lays the groundwork for something nice and expandable when this spring rolls around.  What’s to stop Nintendo from updating the map again via a downloadable update to your game so you’ll have a little more Mario or Metroid to play?  (Giant hopes for Metroid expansions. That game is like crack to me.)

Does this seem possible to anyone else?

The Easter Bunny Hates You

Happy Easter!

Blade Runner

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Last night I saw Blade Runner for the first time. Â It wasn’t too bad, but I expected it to be a pee-yourself-silly-it’s-so-good masterpiece from Ridley Scott after all the great things I’ve heard (which it was not). Â Did I miss something? Â Someone please explain this to me.

Also, I believe Harrison Ford pretty much plays the same character in every movie, with only a different name and job. Â The “I am so good, I really don’t care a thing about who you are or what you do, just get me a drink” guy. Â That’s fine, because he rules. Â But does anyone else notice that?Â

Sagmeister Lecture!

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

stefan.jpgRecently, I got to see Stefan Sagmeister lecture at the University of Washington. Â And I feel compelled to say this guy seems to be one of the smartest, most honest, and funny guys in design I’ve seen yet.Â

He started off discussing his work for the music industry, which is how I was introduced to his work. Â He’s done some really incredible, well-conceived work. Â Turns out, he had 2 main timeframes for working on them. Â One is that he would take three months on a project, and another 3 hours one morning. Â Incredible. Â I’d love 3 months to do a record package. Most of the evening was spent discussing his most recent book “Things I Have Learned So Far In My Life.” Â There were about 20 of these gems. Â Stefan took a year off from working with clients, experimented with design, and wrote most of these. Â It’s hard to pick out the best ones, they were all great. Not that anyone is here for a life lesson or anything, but what you read here carries over nicely to your everyday life too. Bonus!

He’s also got a website dedicated to this, and you can contribute things you’ve learned too!  Check it out!

Craigslist is weird, funny.

Friday, March 21st, 2008

While surfing for good free stuff on Craigslist (yes, you know you do it too) my wife came across a couple of gems.  One invites you to get free used dandruff cream:

Does anyone have horrible dandruff? I have a few bottles of cream that were expensive and I don’t mind saving them for you when you are in the area. I want them to go to a good home. It worked pretty good.
